What Are Some Troubleshooting Tips If My Furnace Won’t Turn On?

If your furnace won’t turn on, there are a few simple troubleshooting steps you can try before calling our professionals for repairs. You may be able to resolve the issue yourself.

Start by checking your thermostat. Confirm that it is set to "heat" and that the temperature is set higher than the current room temperature. Sometimes, thermostats can be switched to "cool" or have their settings changed accidentally. Check the batteries in your thermostat as well, as dead or dying batteries can prevent it from operating correctly.

Next, inspect your furnace's power supply. Look at your circuit breaker or fuse box and verify that the furnace's circuit hasn't tripped. Reset it, if necessary, but do not repeatedly reset it if it trips again and again. You should also confirm that your furnace's power switch, which is usually located near the unit, is in the “on” position. It often resembles a light switch.

Another common issue involves the air filter. A clogged or dirty air filter can restrict airflow and cause your furnace to shut down as a protective measure. If you feel comfortable doing so, replace the air filter with a new one if it looks dirty or if it hasn’t been replaced in a while.

Check your furnace's gas supply if it relies on natural gas. The gas valve should be open, allowing fuel to reach the unit. If you suspect an issue with the gas line, contact your utility provider rather than attempting repairs yourself. For furnaces with a pilot light, make sure the light is lit. Again, if you feel comfortable doing so, you can follow your furnace manufacturer’s instructions for relighting it yourself.

Finally, take a look at your furnace's drainage system. High-efficiency furnaces typically have a condensate drain. If this drain becomes clogged, it can create pressure issues that stop your furnace from turning on. Clearing any obstructions may restore functionality.

Taking the time to investigate these basic problems can potentially save a service call and get your furnace running again quickly. If your system still doesn’t start after these checks, reach out to our team at Gillette Heating And Air Conditioning to address and resolve the problem.

It was not an easy task but they made it happen and I am so happy and excited. It is just how I wanted it and they were very professional. My daughter referred me to Gillette Heating and Air and I will most definitely be referring my family and friends to your company also.”

“Braxtin and Shawn were very professional installing the Infinity heat pump and furnace. I was told that because of the tight area I would not be able to take advantage of the 4 inch filter, but Shawn and Braxtin were able to custom fit the system so that a 4 inch filter could also be installed. They also left the area cleaner than they found it. I highly recommend them.”

Signs Your Furnace Needs Professional Repairs

If your furnace won’t turn on despite troubleshooting attempts, you already know your furnace likely needs repairs. In many cases, your furnace will start to show signs of trouble before it stops working entirely. Recognizing these signs early can help prevent a complete furnace breakdown. Ignoring these signs can lead to more extensive damage, higher energy bills, or even safety risks.

Reach out to our Provo furnace repair experts right away if you are dealing with any of the following problems:

    • Unusual noises coming from your furnace. Furnaces typically operate with a consistent hum, but loud or irregular noises like banging, squealing, or rattling often signal a deeper issue. These sounds can indicate anything from a loose component to a failing motor or belt. Addressing these noises promptly prevents further mechanical strain on your system.
    • Uneven heating in your home. If some rooms feel significantly warmer or colder than others, your furnace may be struggling to distribute heat effectively. This problem could relate to a failing blower motor, clogged ductwork, or issues with your thermostat. Professional diagnosis and repair can restore balanced heating throughout your home.

We can repair residential and commercial furnaces throughout Utah County, including in Sandy, Spanish Fork, Orem, Lehi, and West Jordan. Again, we offer same-day support for emergencies, so call (801) 760-7724 or contact us online to book a service appointment.
