Sizing an Air Conditioner Correctly Comes Before Anything Else

A new air conditioner that is too large for a home short-cycles, turning on and off in rapid bursts that never let it remove humidity from the air. A unit that is too small runs constantly and still fails to reach the thermostat setting on the hottest afternoons. In Spanish Fork, where summer temperatures regularly push into the 90s and the dry climate places specific demands on cooling equipment, getting the sizing right is the foundation of every installation we perform at Gillette Services - Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning.

Before we recommend any equipment, we calculate the cooling load for your specific home. This means measuring square footage, evaluating insulation levels, counting and orienting windows, checking ceiling heights, and noting how much direct sun each part of the structure receives. A home with large west-facing windows gains far more heat in the late afternoon than one shaded by mature trees. We use these measurements to determine the correct tonnage rather than guessing or simply matching whatever unit was there before. An older system that was oversized for years does not need to be replaced with another oversized system.

What a Complete AC Installation Involves

Air conditioner installation is more than setting a condenser on a pad and connecting a few wires. A proper central air installation ties together the outdoor condensing unit, the indoor evaporator coil, the refrigerant lines, the electrical supply, and the existing ductwork into one balanced system. When any one of these components is mismatched or poorly installed, the entire system suffers in efficiency and lifespan.

Here is the general sequence we follow on a typical installation day:

  • Site preparation: We protect flooring and work areas, then safely recover any refrigerant from the old system according to environmental regulations.
  • Removal and inspection: The old equipment is disconnected and removed, and we inspect the existing ductwork, line set, and electrical connections for damage or leaks.
  • Setting the equipment: The new condenser is placed on a level pad and the evaporator coil is fitted to the air handler or furnace.
  • Connecting and charging: Refrigerant lines are brazed, the system is pulled into a deep vacuum to remove moisture and air, then charged to the manufacturer’s exact specification.
  • Testing and verification: We verify airflow, check refrigerant pressures, confirm the thermostat operates correctly, and measure the temperature drop across the coil.

Each of these steps matters. Skipping the vacuum process, for example, leaves moisture in the lines that can freeze at the metering device and reduce cooling capacity. A charge that is off by even a small amount can cost you efficiency every month for the life of the system. As an air conditioning company that takes responsibility for our work, we do not cut corners on any of these stages.

Technical Specifications Worth Understanding

When you choose a new system, a few technical terms directly affect your comfort and your monthly bills. SEER2 ratings measure seasonal cooling efficiency, and higher numbers generally mean lower operating costs. Two-stage and variable-speed compressors can run at partial capacity during milder conditions, which improves both humidity control and energy use compared to older single-stage units that only run at full blast.

Refrigerant type also matters. Newer systems use refrigerants that meet current environmental standards, and matching the indoor and outdoor components ensures the system operates as the manufacturer intended. During installation we confirm that the line set is properly sized for the equipment and that the ductwork can handle the required airflow. Undersized or leaky ducts undermine even the best equipment, so we address these problems rather than ignoring them.

When Spanish Fork Homeowners Turn to Us

Installations are not always planned months in advance. Many of the calls we receive share common circumstances, and we are ready for each of them:

  1. An aging system that finally quit: A unit past 15 years old often fails during the first serious heat wave, and homeowners need a fast, reliable replacement.
  2. A remodel or addition: New square footage changes the cooling load, and the existing system may no longer be adequate.
  3. Rising energy bills: An inefficient old unit can cost far more to run than a modern one, and replacement often pays for itself in comfort and savings.

Whatever the situation, we offer fast response times and personalized service. We take the time to understand your home and your priorities before recommending a solution, because no two houses cool the same way.
